OTTAWA, April 6, 2004 - QNX Software Systems today announced that Leitch Technology Corporation (TSX:LTV) has chosen the QNX® Neutrino® RTOS for Leitch’s new MPEG-2 stream manipulation product, the Digital Turnaround ProcessorTM (DTPTM).

Using the DTP, television broadcasters can generate extra revenue from their national content by making it more relevant to local audiences. They can, for example, localize a remotely encoded digital television signal by overlaying it with local news and weather; they can also overlay station logos, as well as stock information and other content.

Importantly, the DTP is the first product to overlay moving logos and other dynamic graphics without having to decode and re-encode the original MPEG video stream. This approach not only reduces transmission costs by allowing streams to be distributed at lower bit rates, but also eliminates the image degeneration associated with repeated encoding operations, allowing pristine, high-definition video quality - one of the main benefits of HDTV.

The DTP is based on a general-purpose computing platform and relies on the QNX Neutrino RTOS to handle real-time compressed stream processing. The resulting hardware/software architecture allows Leitch to continuously and easily upgrade video algorithms and leverage the fast pace of processor enhancements. To deliver reliable, high-performance operation, the DTP takes advantage of QNX Neutrino's fault-tolerant microkernel architecture and powerful symmetrical processing (SMP) capabilities.

'By working with Leitch, QNX is helping to leverage general-purpose computing power for the broadcast industry, while maintaining the industry's 24 by 7 operational requirements,' said Dan Dodge, CEO of QNX Software Systems.

The DTP represents the second generation of all-MPEG-2 processing products that leverage the ongoing success of Leitch’s AgileVision product line, which has been the leading choice of ATSC stations in the U.S. for the past two years.

The DTP integrates seamlessly with broadcast automation systems for smoother upgrades to new services by leveraging installed equipment and, more importantly, by extending operating procedures rather than replacing them. To integrate easily with leading broadcast automation systems, the DTP supports industry-standard protocols that mimic multi-channel master control switchers. Additionally, the DTP product is pre-integrated with MicroFirst’s Digital Automation System (D.A.S.) to accelerate time-to-air for stations wishing to launch new DTV services.
